Original WWI Imperial German Überzug Maker Marked Helmet Cover for Pickelhaube Helmets - Size 57

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a good condition original Überzug (helmet cover), something that we have only had very few of before. Thought by some to be a product of the First World war, the Überzug ("Pull over" or helmet cover) was first introduced for general issue on 17 May 1892. The brass and German silver fittings on all pickelhaube helmets, although very attractive in garrison, proved to be highly reflective and were determined to be a liability in the field. For this reason, a cloth Überzug was introduced to be worn by all ranks on all helmets when in the field. This need was later negated in 1915, with the introduction of oxide coated steel fittings.

This example is in very good condition, and has steel hooks under the front and back for attachment to the Pickelhaube visors. It also has a drawstring around the top, and inside the spike cover there is actually leather, though it is now cracked and stiff. The inside has a maker mark, which we cannot quite make out, however it definitely reads Berlin at the bottom. Next to this is the size 57. The cover does show wear and staining, including rust stains from the somewhat corroded retaining hooks.

A great example of a hard to find German Pickelhaube Accessory, ready to display!

NOTE: COVER ONLY. Helmet is used to show the correct shape, and is not included.
