Original Item: Only One Available. This is a gorgeous Imperial German 19th Century ‘Fore and Aft’ Bicorn chapeau bras hat for an officer in the Imperial German Navy, or Kaiserliche Marine, circa 1888-1890. Black beaver pelt with gilt wire and white Ostrich features around the brim. Silk lining with maker marking for T.F. Bock, Hol-Lieferant in Berlin, Germany.
This example bears a single button which appears to denote service under Frederick III, German Emperor. Frederick III was German Emperor and King of Prussia for 99 days from 9 March 1888 until his death in June that year, during the Year of the Three Emperors.
The chapeau bears a Prussian cockade under the bullion trim. The ostrich feathers are well-retained with some minor loss.
The underside of the hat shows some minor tearing in the base material. There is a long leather sweatband inside with white silk lining that is now full of holes. There is a faint maker’s mark of a German Eagle clutching the scepter and orb over:
T.F. Bock, Hol-Lieferant in Berlin
We are likely transcribing this wrong, but it should make for a great research project.
A gorgeous example, the earliest German chapeau we have offered. Ready for display.
