Original Item: Only One Available. A fine example of a WWI period Model 1870 French Cuirassier Enlisted Trooper’s Helmet. The helmet is comprised of a steel body with brass fittings, black horsehair tail and red feather plume on the left. The leather lining is intact, but it is a new made item, most likely done by a previous collector.
The Helmet features a Tall Brass Cimier with the "Medusa head" emblem to the front. Period Black horse mane on top and back of the helmet but with replacement screws. The Helmet "bandeau" is the French Coat of Arms for the city of Paris. The coat of arms of the city of Paris shows a silver sailing ship on waves of the sea in a red field, with a chief showing the Royal emblem of gold-on-blue fleur-de-lis. Originally introduced in the 14th century, its current form dates to 1853. The city motto is Fluctuat nec mergitur ("[She] is tossed [by the waves], but does not sink"). The traditional colors of the city of Paris are red and blue. Both original chinscales remain attached to the helmet by the standard bayonet type fixation.
The helmet is most likely from the First World War. The helmet does exhibit some slight wear to the exterior, with browned oxidation throughout on the interior. The brass fittings have mellowed to a very pleasing patinated coloration as well. It is however a good looking helmet and is complete and original in every area apart.
Whether it be from the Franco/Prussian War of 1870-71 period or the Great War of 1914/1918. Ready for display!
