Original WWI Era U.S. Navy Named Bell Crown Visor Cap with Bullion Insignia - Dated 1913

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice U.S. Navy "Bell Crown" visor cap, intended to be work by Enlisted Men for dress and parade occasions. The name comes from the pronounced flare out towards the top of the cap. This cap is winter weight, and is constructed of wool fabric stretched over a wicker inner frame. The cap is named on the visor to Arthur S. Kreider, with his initials, A.S.K. perforated into the leather sweatband.

The cap features a patent leather visor with, probably supported by pressed paper or fabric. The brown faux leather sweatband is stitched to the body of the hat, and is in fair shape but much of the stitching has worn away. There is still a size stamp on the sweatband, for Size 7⅛. There is a large tag in the back behind the sweatband with a patent date of January 7th, 1913. Next to this is a tag for the United Cloth Hat & Cap Makers of North America. There is a maker’s mark in the center of the crown but it has unfortunately worn away from use.

There is a great gold-tape chinstrap held by two gilt Navy buttons, with a gorgeous bullion Naval insignia with a rope wrapped around an anchor.

Arthur S. Kreider enlisted in the Naval Guard in New Jersey in April 1918, and traveled overseas to Rotterdam, Netherlands later that year. Much more research is required on him, making this a great project. Comes ready for further research and display!
