Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice condition New York National Guard Field Artillery Officer's M1902 visor cap in very dark blue, intended to be worn by Officers for dress and parade occasions. This example is particularly well made, with the New York officer's front insignia FULLY HAND EMBROIDERED in gold and silver bullion. The hat band is red, denoting field artillery, and the gold tape chinstrap is held in by two gilt New York buttons.
The cap features a patent leather covered visor, probably supported by pressed paper or fabric. The brown leather sweatband is stitched to the body of the hat, with much of the stitching now gone. The shape of the cap has deformed a bit, but some time on a mannequin head should fix that. The crown of the cap is lined with black satin fabric, and is marked as follows:
RIDABOCK & COMPANY
TRADEMARK
NEW YORK
149-151 W. 36TH ST. WEST OF BWAY
The markings are now very faint and are difficult to read. There was a size tag on the sweatband at one point but it is now too worn to read. The sweatband is marked as being Real Russia Leather. The hat is roughly a size 7 ⅜.
The combination of the M1902 officer pattern, New York National Guard insignia, Field Artillery red band, hand-embroidered bullion work, Ridabock & Company maker marking, and Real Russia Leather sweatband makes this a particularly attractive surviving example of early-20th-century American officer headgear from the WWI era.
