  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a gorgeous and scarcely seen 1916-Dated Uhlan Tschapka with a reproduction white, red, and black Fangschnure cord, an original liner and cockade, a reproduction chinstrap and a reproduction cover with a 19, denoting the 19th (1st Württemberg) Uhlan Regiment “Kaiser Karl”. The back of the Wappen has repaired soldered loops. A great display piece.

The Ulanen (Lancers) Tschapka (chapka) with its distinctive square top first appeared in 1808 when Preußen introduced Ulanen (Lancer) Regiments to emulate the Polish lancers as did many nations; especially after the Polish Lancer's performance at Waterloo in 1815. The M1843 Tschapka was a tall helmet with a squared top which was secured with gilt chinscales. The neck of the upper flat portion on the Tschapka (called a "mortar board" by English collectors) was permanently covered with a colored cloth Paraderabatte (parade rabatte). The Paraderabatten colors were specific to each Regiment but were trimmed in white for Mannschaften (Other Ranks) and silver bullion for officers. The Fangschnur (securing cord) were attached to the top of the Tschapka with a toggle for Mannschaften and a hook for officer and private purchase.

This example is in good condition with a nice original Württemberg Wappen. It retains a large reproduction chinstrap. It has the correct tri-color metal Kokarde (cockade) around the right chin strap lug, and no cockade on the left crown of the cap, which is correct, as there is a Württemberg Feldzeichen on the mortar board. For reference purposes: In 1897 the new Reichs-Kokarde in Red-White-Black was introduced for all ranks to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kaiser Wilhelm 1st.

The leather liner is in fair condition with some cracking and crazing, but it’s retained its color well. A faint 1916 date can be seen on the interior shell along with a Size stamp, 58. The helmet has what we believe to be an artificially aged Fangschnur securing cord with the correct white, red, and black colors for Württemberg.

The reproduction cover is a great display piece and does have fake 1915 markings on the underside. The 19 on the front is correct for the 19th (1st Württemberg) Uhlan Regiment “Kaiser Karl”, so whoever put this together certainly did their homework.

Overall a fantastic lancer's Uhlan Tschapka!
