Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a fantastic condition, beautiful example of a West German made M7 bayonet. The condition is near excellent and has the appearance of having not been issued out. This is an unusual variation of the M7 bayonet-knife, made with no lower crosspiece. This was done to allow use on the West German G3 assault rifle, in addition to the M16. On the G3, the bayonet is fixed inverted, above the barrel, and the typical M7 lower crosspiece would block the sight picture if not eliminated.
According to the author/researcher, the late M.H. Cole, a letter from Colt, dated February 2, 1979, indicated these M7 bayonets with the abbreviated crosspiece were the first M7 production lot produced ca. 1975/76 by Carl Eickhorn Waffenfabrik AG of Solingen, West Germany, under license from Colt. Carl Eickhorn's total 1970s production of Colt M7 bayonets was approximately 80,000, only a portion of which had the abbreviated crosspiece, making this a fairly scarce piece.
Genuine Vietnam War Era U.S. Army M7 bayonet fighting knife for the M-16 Rifle, with an original M8A1 scabbard. This knife-style bayonet was based on the M4 bayonet for the M1 Carbine, which was itself based on the M3 fighting knife. The M7 is almost identical, except for the much larger muzzle ring to go over the M16's flash hider. This example is nicely marked U.S. M7 around the blade on the cross guard. The blade is marked with COLT’S 62316 / HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.
The blade is in very good condition with almost no wear, and is still relatively sharp. It still has the original phosphate finish fully intact, and the only wear is from the runners, and also some of the plastic from the scabbard has rubbed onto the finish. Grips are the standard hard black checkered phenolic type, and they are in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips, pretty much unissued save for a bit of oxidation.
Comes with an OD green scabbard marked U.S. M8A1 also offered in very good
condition. This design features a hard plastic body, metal throat, and canvas frog and securing strap with a steel pistol belt hook. This was manufactured in Germany and even has lovely German pebbled buttons on the securing strap. The condition is pretty much unissued, with just light storage wear.
The perfect accessory for any Vietnam War issue M16 Rifle.
