Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very good original West German Cold War-era Bundesgrenzschutz M53 steel helmet, complete with its original green helmet net, full liner, and chinstrap. The helmet retains the classic German Stahlhelm profile while incorporating distinctly postwar construction and liner features associated with the Federal Border Guard.
The Bundesgrenzschutz, or Federal Border Guard, was established in 1951 as a federal police force responsible primarily for border security during the opening years of the Cold War. It was organized at the federal level rather than through the individual German states, distinguishing it from the regular Landespolizei.
When the Bundeswehr was created in 1955–1956, a substantial number of Bundesgrenzschutz personnel transferred into the new armed forces, and the early BGS played an important role in providing trained manpower for West Germany’s rearmament. The Bundesgrenzschutz itself, however, continued to exist as a federal police organization for decades afterward and was renamed the Bundespolizei in 2005.
The helmet has a thick green helmet net attached via six steel hooks, and it looks great. Because there are ventilation holes in this helmet, it is more often referred to as an M1951 by collectors.
The liner is stamped 60 for the size and M-1943 which may be for the liner style. There are no shell markings we can find.
The combination of the postwar Stahlhelm-form shell, vented M53 configuration, original six-hook green helmet net, complete liner and chinstrap, size 60 marking, and surviving M-1943 liner stamp makes this a strong representative example of early West German Bundesgrenzschutz equipment. The absence of identifiable shell markings is the principal limitation, while the complete net and liner system remain its strongest collector features.
