Original Item: One Only. Found in upper New York State, this is an original Ship's Boat Hook for use in one of the Men-o-War's boats, used when travelling from ship to shore, between boats, etc. This example has iron fittings on a wood haft marked DETROIT, and was found in a barn before coming to us.Nice War of 1812 item, ready for display, 52" overall length, iron fittings well rusted but clearly this is all original.
H.M.S. DETROIT was a 20 gun British Man-o-War which operated on Lake Erie and during the War of 1812 was captured by the Americans on September 10th 1813 during the Battle of Lake Erie. She was then re-commissioned into the U.S. Navy as the first U.S.S. DETROIT. However, the ship was already so badly damaged that she was immediately laid up, and sold off by the U.S. NAVY in 1825.
