This is a very good inert example of a Chinese Type 67 stick grenade of the pattern supplied in large numbers to North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong forces during the Vietnam War. The grenade retains its wooden handle, metal warhead, threaded bottom plug, and internal pull string. Three drilled holes in the head document the demilitarization process.

This grenade is completely inert and has been permanently deactivated in accordance with current ATF guidelines. It contains no explosive material, cannot function as originally designed, and cannot be converted into an explosive device. It is not available for export.

The metal warhead remains firmly attached to the wooden handle and does not unscrew. Two demilitarization holes have been drilled through the side of the head, with a third hole drilled through the top.

The lower threaded plug remains present and can be removed to inspect the inert interior. The original pull string is still retained within the handle, an important component that is often missing from surviving examples.

The grenade has a black painted band directly beneath the head. The complete assembly measures approximately 8⅛” long. The grenade remains in very good overall condition. The metal body, wooden shaft, threaded plug, and pull string are all well retained, with expected age and handling wear. The handle has some heavy staining and the head has scattered oxidation.

The Type 67 was a standardized Chinese stick grenade developed after WWII. Its basic configuration continued the long Chinese use of wooden handled grenades influenced by the German Model 1924 Stielhandgranate.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Chinese arsenals and smaller workshops manufactured large numbers of stick grenades in several related forms. Their construction varied, but most combined a wooden handle, metal explosive head, friction ignition system, and pull cord protected by a removable lower cap.

Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the People’s Liberation Army standardized later patterns, including the Type 67. Large quantities of Chinese weapons and ordnance were subsequently supplied to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and Communist forces operating in South Vietnam.

Type 67 grenades are consequently associated with both the People’s Army of Vietnam and Viet Cong forces during the Vietnam War. Without capture documentation, unit markings, or veteran provenance, however, the service history of this particular example cannot be established.

The retained threaded bottom plug, surviving pull string, black identification band, fixed and wooden shaft, make this a notably complete inert example. The three drilled demilitarization holes are clearly visible and permanently distinguish it from a functional grenade.
