Original Item. Only One Available. This is a scarcely seen Chinese-made portable water can used by the Vietcong during the Vietnam War. This model is confirmed having been used by the VC via another example we’ve seen with provenance brought back from Cambodia. The straps on this example suggest it may have been a vehicle canteen, but we are unsure.
The canteen measures about 12” tall with the cap on, about 8” wide, and about 5” deep with the straps on. The straps wrap around the canteen with two full horizontal straps, two long vertical straps, and one more small horizontal strap connecting the two verticals. There are some rips to the straps as shown but no complete breakage. The plastic cap still functions and has a small rope attached that no longer attaches to the canteen itself. The canteen itself is very scuffed and shows heavy field use.
The two vertical straps have buckles that are rather rusted as shown, which could allow the straps to hang off of a vehicle bar or off of a backpack of some sort. We aren’t entirely sure, so this could definitely use further research. This is a documented example to have been used by the Vietcong, but its exact use is unknown. The loosening of the straps would allow the canteen to be removed from them.
This is a wonderful example of a likely captured Vietcong water can brought home by an American serviceman after his tour. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
