Original Victorian Woburn Abbey Fire Brigade Merryweather Brass Fire Helmet c. 1890
Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. WOBURN ABBEY is the fabulous home of the DUKE OF BEDFORD, leader of a family that accumulated vast wealth and estates in the times of the Tudors in the 16th century. Today it is one of England's most visited tourist attractions, being just outside London in the County of Bedfordshire. In Victorian times, before income tax, these vast estates had copious servants and agricultural workers, often numbering into the hundreds. For a time Woburn Abbey even fielded its own Fire Brigade for the protection of the Abbey, the farms and everything else in the locality.
Here we have a lovely all brass Merryweather Pattern brass Fire helmet, embossed across the front W.A./ F.B. for Woburn Abbey Fire Brigade. Coming from long time storage, it has some dings to the comb but is in really good condition. Sadly the leather lining is absent, and it even looks as if it was never fitted with one, which could explain that apart from storage wear it is in such good condition perhaps never having actually been issued. Comes complete with it's correct brass interlocking ring chin scales mounted on black leather, now somewhat stiff from age.
A great looking item maybe 140 years old, ready to display!
