Original Item: Only One Available. This lovely double barreled pocket percussion pistol was made in Liège, Belgium, almost certainly for the European and American export markets. These were quite popular for self-protection, and having two barrels definitely would give the owner increased protection. Pistols like this were equally at home on dark Streets of New York or of London in Victorian England. It features some exquisite floral engraving on the sides of the frame, as well as on the bottom, where there are two hidden triggers.
The smoothbore barrels measure 3" in length, and have grooves inside the muzzle so they can be unscrewed, however they are currently frozen. Both are lovely spiral forged "Damascus" steel barrels, which still show great lamination and look great, and definitely indicate a high end piece. The left side of the frame is marked with the E / L G / * in an Oval proof, indicating manufacture in Liège, Belgium. The other side bears a CROWN / PF in an Oval ,which be believe is a maker mark, or possibly an inspection stamp, which we have not been able to identify. The pistol measures 6 7/8" overall, there are no other markings we can see besides the proofs. It has a lovely French-style fluted ebony wood grip with an iron beveled butt cap, which is in excellent condition.
Condition of the pistol is very good, showing a lovely polished steel finish, with some small areas of past peppering, now cleaned away. The hammers show a high level of craftsmanship, with engraved designs, and both cap nipples look great. Functionally, unfortunately both sides of the action are not working correctly. The right side hammer can be pulled back, and the trigger flips out, but the sear does not catch the tumbler at all. The left side cannot be cocked at all, and we did not want to force it.
Still, it is a truly beautiful pistol, and with the right skills and time could be put back right, if desired, or it makes a fantastic display piece as it is. A lovely example.
