Original Victorian Era Officer Astrakhan Karakul Hat by Samuel Brothers Ltd

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely Victorian Era Officer’s “astrakhan” karakul cap. A Karakul hat, sometimes spelled as Qaraqul hat, also called Uzbek hat and Jinnah Cap is a hat made from the fur of the Qaraqul breed of sheep. Karakul directly translates to black fur in the Uzbek language and the hat originally comes from Bukhara. The fur from which it is made is referred to as Astrakhan, broadtail, qaraqulcha, or Persian lamb. The hat is peaked, and folds flat when taken off of the wearer's head.

This example is in wonderful condition and still retains the original “pom-pom” on the front as well as the decorative braided rope on the left side. The interior has a lovely leather sweatband that appears to still be completely attached. The polished black cotton lining in the crown still retains the original embossed silver maker information and reads as follows:

SAMUEL BROTHERS LIMITED
LUDGATE HILL LONDON

Samuel Brothers was established in 1830 on Ludgate Hill, London, and opened premises on Oxford Street in 1915, before moving to Bartholomew Place and then into Clerkenwell Green. In 1993 the company relocated its offices to the Headquarters of The Royal Logistic Corps upon invitation, where it remained until 2016, when it moved into Aldershot, the Home of The British Army.

The Company supplied many London companies with livery and at the turn of the last century was reputed to have been one of the largest exporters of uniforms in Europe with four factories located in London. Livery was being shipped as far afield as the White House in Washington. At the outbreak of World War One, the company focused on military and was commissioned by the War Office to produce the first waterproof coat for Officers of the British Army.

In 1908 the company was awarded a Gold Medal & Diploma of Honour at the Franco-British Exhibition. In 2017 the company was honored to be appointed with a Royal Warrant as Tailors to HM The Queen.

This lovely example comes more than ready for further research and display.
