Original Items: Only One Set Available. Here we have a lovely East African Warriors set, brought home to England we are told before World War One by a plantation owner. The items are all Victoran era, originating from the East African Maasai people, and represent typical examples of the arms they used in the 19th century.
The first piece of the set is a typical Maasai short sword, known as a "semi", which comes with most of its original leather scabbard and a section of leather waist/shoulder belt. The sword measures 33 ½” overall, with a thin 29 ¾” long blade, which is quite sturdy. The handle is wood wrapped with leather.
The second piece of the set is a very long double ended lion spear, 82” in overall length, which disassembles into two sections. It has a 39 ½” long cutting blade on one end, similar in design to the “semi”, while the other end is a 33” long spike. When disassembled the longer section is 49 inches long.
The last part of the set is a magnificent painted shield, which we suspect is made from rhino hide. It measures 42" in height and 21" in width, with a wood spine to the inside bound in old leather thonging.
The Maasai are extremely tall and were known as exceptional lion hunters during the Victorian Era. This is a great collectors set which we are unlikely to see the likes of anytime in the near future.
