Original Victorian Era Belgian Pocket Percussion Pistol with Spring Loaded Bayonet - Circa 1840

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely utilitarian iron-framed pocket percussion pistol, which features a fully functional spring loaded bayonet under the barrel. Made in Liège, Belgium for the European and American export markets, these were quite popular for self-protection, and having a short bayonet on the end definitely helped. As it is spring loaded it did not interfere with the concealability of the pistol, and could easily be deployed in an instant. Pistols like this were equally at home on dark Streets of New York or of London in Victorian England.

The smoothbore barrel measures about 3 3/4" in length, and is one solid piece, continuous with the frame of the gun. At the front of this is the spring bayonet, which has a 1 3/4" triangular blade. The pistol measures almost 8" overall, perfect for an overcoat pocket. It is marked on the left side with E / L G / * in an oval, indicating manufacture in Liège, Belgium. There is another CROWN / F mark above this, standard for the Belgian guns, which usually represent a specific inspector. There are no other markings on the pistol whatsoever. The pistol features a very nice flat sided wooden "bag" style grip, which is very comfortable to hold. It also shows wonderful "tiger flame" figuring throughout, making it a lovely example.

Condition of the revolver is good, showing that it definitely did see significant use during its service life. The interior of the bore shows fouling and oxidation, and there is definitely wear and light denting to the exterior of the pistol. The hammer and cap nipple cone show some powder burn from use. The pistol functions, though it does not hold firmly at half cock. The spring loaded bayonet is fully functional, locking in place on the muzzle. The release is a bit worn, so the front release does not need to be pressed in to manually unlock the bayonet.

A very nice early Victorian Era self defense pistol, ready to Display!
