Original Victorian Continental Style Double Barrel 11mm Rolling Block Pistol - circa 1880
Item Description
Original item. Only One Available. Here we have a very nice double barrel hammer pistol featuring two barrels, two triggers, and an interesting "rolling block" style breech. The bore measures out to about 11mm, though we do not know precisely what cartridge it was chambered for. Intended for self protection, the pistol is easily concealable in an overcoat pocket or large Lady's bag. During the late Victorian era these were very popular as a method of self defense.
The pistol is made in the standard European continental style, and features checkered walnut grips, which now show quite a bit of wear. Now polished bright has no Maker's markings but was perfectly suited to seeing off any undesirable assailant in the Victorian era. We suspect it was made in the Belgian factory city of Liège, a firearms production powerhouse during the 19th century and beyond.
The condition of the pistol is good, but it does show significant wear throughout. The grips are a bit loose, and the action is definitely a bit clunk. The tips of the hammers are worn down from hitting the back of the firing pins, both of which are still intact. The extractor for the pistol seems to be missing, visible when the breech is opened. We checked the bore, and there are only traces of the original rifling now, with wear and fouling on the interior. This is definitely a pistol that saw extensive use during its service life.
A very interesting rolling block pistol from the continent, dating to about 1880 and ready to display!
