Original Victorian British East India Company Saddle Ring Carbine with Captured Ramrod & Twist Forged Barrel - circa 1842

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Just purchased back from the estate of a longtime IMA customer, this is a very nice British EIC Saddle Ring carbine with a very nice "Twist steel" forged barrel. The style of the "EIC Lion" on the lock looks to indicate local manufacture in India under British supervision, though it is also just as possible that it was assembled using British made parts. The hammer in particular definitely looks to be of British manufacture. so the lock may have been remarked when the gun was assembled.

The carbine has a 25 1/2" barrel with a "captured" swivel ramrod, a saddle bar to the left side with two saddle rings, and all brass mounts. This would have started life as .65 rifled carbine, however the barrel has been "smooth bored" to .75 caliber for use AFTER the Sepoy Rebellion, more commonly known as the Indian Mutiny of 1857 to 1859.

This came to us from our Nepalese Palace purchase of 2003, but bears no Nepalese or Indian script markings whatsoever. The carbine is in good condition, though does show age, and it has been restored to to put it in its best light. The metalwork is in good shape, polished bright, though the barrel definitely shows some oxidation, which also helps show the twist forging in the barrel. The cap bolster area shows significant powder burn, and there also looks to be a brazed repair in that area as well. The lock is functional, holding correctly at half cock, and firing at full.

The stock is in good shape, with a lovely color and just a few repairs, including one above the front of the lock plate. The mountings are all brass, and now show a lovely polished patina. Both sling swivels are present in addition to the saddle bar and rings. Overall it presents very nicely.

Fully cleaned and ready to display!
