Original Very Rare Belgian M-1848 Thouvenin Percussion Rifle Bayonet with Brass Hilt - dated 1852

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. These are very rare! This is a bayonet for the relatively short-lived Belgian M-1848 Thouvenin 17.5mm Percussion rifle, a "pillar breech" system firearm. This design was a fore-runner of the Minié ball system, and was intended to aid the lead projectile's grip on the rifling grooves. The barrel featured a "pillar" in the chamber, and when loaded, the ramming action would deform the bullet when it hit the pillar, causing it to engage the grooves. The later Minié ball accomplished this with cavity in the bottom of the cartridge, which expanded when fired. Both of these solved the loading a rifled musket, which always suffered from powder fouling issues.

The bayonet's design is very distinctive, with its straight iron cross guard with a knob on the end and an all brass ribbed grip. It is also very long, with a 24 inch long straight single edge blade with a wide fuller on each side. Measuring just over 29" in overall length, a very long bayonet, almost a short sword. Please see Watts & White, THE BAYONET BOOK, Page 27, Item 58"

Offered in excellent condition, scabbard absent however very very rare. This would make a great addition to any bayonet collection, ready to display!
