Original Unissued U.S. Pre-WWI M1878 Canteen and Belt Clip by Rock Island Arsenal - dated 1909

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent unissued condition U.S. M1878 Canteen with the standard a tan canvas cover and belt clip strap. It has a clear U.S. stamp on the front, over R.I.A. / 1909, indicating manufacture by Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois. This model of canteen would be replaced by the M1910 in the following year, so it most likely was never put into service, and kept in storage, as it was obsolete.
The canteen is complete with the original cork stopper, which is still attached by a chain to a loop around the canteen's neck. There is also a canvas belt clip attached to the triangular sling swivels, which has a clip on the end for attaching to a belt or other combat rigging. The strap is marked R.I.A. / 1905, also made at Rock Island.
Aside from a bit of storage wear and light oxidation on the metal components, this canteen is as close to mint as one is ever likely to see. A great chance to pick up a great unissued example of this iconic canteen, complete with a belt clip.
