Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. The M1 helmet is a combat helmet that was used by the United States military from World War II until 1985, when it was succeeded by the PASGT helmet. For over forty years, the M1 was standard issue for the U.S. military. The M1 helmet has become an icon of the American military, with its design inspiring other militaries around the world.
This is an interesting WWII front seam swivel bale M1 helmet with heat lot stamp 1131I. The helmet was reissued during the Vietnam War period, with a correct Vietnam War era chinstrap, and the shell has been decorated with GI graffiti, some in Latin and some showing some interesting perspective to the period. The very top of the helmet is marked ‘69, denoting the year when the graffiti was painted, 1969.
Some of the white-painted inscriptions include:
- ZERVAS SI / ROADY NO
- [IGNORANE IS AN EXCUSE]
- “BARTENDER” (NON-LEGAL)
- “NON COMPOS MENTIS” - Means “Not of sound mind”
- SEWELL WILL “WHAT CAN I DO YOU FOR” YOU OUT OF SCHOOL.
- “I’M FAT BUT HAPPY”
- “BITE ME! THEN FIX ME A DRINK!”
- (WELSH CAN LICK THE WORLD)
- SOC ET TIUM
The liner is a WWII Firestone example painted white with nine holes punched through the crown for reasons we do not understand. The liner was also a bit crushed on one side. The liner may have been added later. The sweatband is mostly retained but the chinstrap is gone and the suspension has tearing.
A very interesting Vietnam War graffiti helmet, ready for display.
