Original Item: Only One Available. The M1 helmet is a combat helmet that was used by the United States military from World War II until 1985, when it was succeeded by the PASGT helmet. For over forty years, the M1 was standard issue for the U.S. military. The M1 helmet has become an icon of the American military, with its design inspiring other militaries around the world.
Vietnam War era M-1 helmet shells have a set of swivel (movable) chinstrap loops called bales and a stainless steel rim. These rims were both rust resistant and had non-magnetic qualities that reduced the chance of error readings when placed around certain sensitive equipment (such as a compass).
This helmet is a fine example and still retains all of its original Vietnam War parts and the shell has all original corked grain paint. The cover appears to have been removed from the shell, with the cover not molded to the shape and contours of the helmet shell.
The liner is a correct high pressure 1960s issue liner with a replaced 1983 dated sweatband. The rigging is intact and in great shape, with original markings visible on the sweat band, and just a bit of cracking on the sweat band leather. The rear lower nape strap is present. The liner itself shows honest wear in a hot, humid, environment, but is in good condition overall.
The outside of the liner has reflective Military Police decals for the 133rd Military Police Company. The 133rd was organized on November 1, 1898 in the South Carolina Volunteer Militia at Timmonsville as the Timmonsville Guards. During the Vietnam war era the unit was redesignated as Company B, 3rd Battalion, 118th Infantry and was relieved from assignment to the 51st Infantry Division. On January 1, 1968 it was converted, reorganized and redesignated as the 133rd Military Police Company.
The shell chin strap is original, and the Mitchell Pattern Cover is original and in very good condition. It has some stains and small holes around the edge, but is definitely solid. It is marked on the underside of one of the flaps:
COVER, HELMET, CAMOUFLAGE
CONTRACT NO. DSA 100-68-C-2188
SSB 8415-261-6833
The original elastic foliage band comes with the helmet, and is in place just as we found it.
These helmets have become increasingly difficult to find in recent years, especially ones with complete wartime dated parts. Almost certainly to appreciate in value year after year!
