Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent Utility knife in mint new old stock condition made by the Cattaraugus Cutlery Company. The only reason it's not considered mint is due to minor storage wear. The set includes the original factory packaging that was used to send knives to their customers, as evidenced by the mailing address and postage on the front of the box. The knife also comes with its original leather scabbard in the same condition. This is a great find for serious edged weapon collectors.
The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was established in 1886 in Little Valley, New York, by John Brown Francis Champlin and his son Tint, who had previously founded the distribution company J.B.F. Champlin and Son in 1882. The Champlin family expanded their business and began producing knives, along with William R. Case and his brothers. They hired skilled cutlers from Germany, England, and other U.S. manufacturers to ensure they produced high-quality cutlery. The company also purchased knife-making equipment from the now-defunct Beaver Falls Cutlery Company.
Cattaraugus Cutlery Company gained recognition for producing top-quality knives and was chosen by Admiral Byrd to be used on his expedition to the South Pole.
However, over time, the Case family parted ways with Cattaraugus Cutlery Company and established their own business, W. R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co., in 1905. Unfortunately, Cattaraugus Cutlery Company closed operations in 1963. The building where the company once operated had stood vacant for several decades and fell into disrepair by the time of the first fire, which occurred in August 2015. Another fire destroyed the building in August 2016. Although another business had occupied the factory's office building for a time in the 1970s, it remains standing while the main factory building is now gone.3
A great set that comes more than ready for further research and display.
