Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is the very interesting Purple Heart grouping of Private First Class L. N. Coffey, and yes, that is his real legal name. The grouping consists of his Purple Heart (not engraved) in the original presentation case with his 1st Marine Division Purple Heart certificate, and a 1st Marine Division patch.
The group consists of:
- Original U.S. WWII Navy Type 1 Purple Heart with split brooch, correctly gold-plated sterling silver as bronze was considered a vital war material. Not engraved, comes in original correct purple presentation case which is partially breaking.
- Original U.S. WWII 1st Marine Division Purple Heart certificate to “L” “N” COFFEY (488540) for injury received as a result of enemy action on 17 JUNE 1945 AT OKINAWA, RYUKYU ISLANDS. Measures 8 x 10”. Heavily folded.
1st Marine Division patch, Guadalcanal.
- Copy of the USMC Casualty report, noting his wound as WFS Face.
When L. N. Coffey was born on 12 June 1915, in Aubrey, Denton, Texas, United States, his father, Webster Maximillian Coffey, was 26 and his mother, Maude Elizabeth Tate, was 19. He married Grace Cleveland on 5 June 1938, in Dallas, Texas, United States. He first enlisted in the Marine Corps on November 24th, 1942. He was part of the 55th Replacement draft, later joining the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was wounded on Okinawa in the face and returned home. He passed away on October 9th, 1987.
