Item Description
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. First issued early in WW2, the Type B-1 Summer Flying Cap saw service in Africa, Europe and the Pacific. It was popular among pilots and ground crew alike, as it was made of breathable fabric, had a slightly longer brim and a more comfortable fit, as it fits lower in the back than most modern baseball caps. The top is made of 4 panels, so it does not need a central "button" like many caps.
This example is in excellent condition, and does not appear to have ever been worn. It still has the original US Army Air Forces stamps on the top and bottom of the brim, and the brim does not have the characteristic rounding that happens from use. The only fading is on the rear of the cap on the fold, which was most likely the only part of the cap exposed to light during long storage.
The leather sweat band is in excellent condition, and the label is still clearly legible, and reads:
