  • Original Items: Only One Set Available. Here we have a lovely set of U.S. WWII Army Air Force bomb release controls, as used in most US bombers during WW2 such as the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and Consolidated B-24 Liberator. To ensure that the bombs were not released prematurely, there were controls both by the bomb racks, as well as with the bombardier controls.

The RELEASE, BOMB RACK TYPE A-2 units were mounted on the bomb racks and would be set by pulling the levers back, which released the shackle levers, releasing the Bomb lugs from the shackle. The bombs could then either be released electrically using a 24VDC supply or manually if the power failed to the bomb racks. There would be one of these on each side, and this is the RIGHT HAND release. Measures 7 5/8"W x 5"H x 2 1/4"D.

The CONTROL, BOMB RELEASE TYPE AN-B3 (Intervalometer) permitted a bombardier to control the number of bombs dropped per release and their impact spacing.  This would be used to set up a carpet bombing run, for example, over a large railroad marshalling yard, vs a more concentrated drop over a specific site such as a ball bearing factory.  The left dial selected the spacing interval between bombs at a given airspeed, while the right dial selected the number of bombs to be released at a time.  The bombardier could also choose to either manually drop the cache or automatically in 'train'. Measures 9" x 5" x 4".

Both items are in very good condition, showing wear from use and age, but still having most of the markings intact. Both have the original data plates, which are a bit oxidized, but still legible with a magnifying glass. A great set of WW2 Bomber items!
