Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is an heavily field-worn condition size 40 Pattern 1944 United States Marine Corps Camouflage Utility Set. This cotton HBT (Herring Bone Twill) Camouflage pattern jacket was issued to Marines at the end of WWII and during the Korean war. This pattern was seen as an improvement over the one-piece "jungle" coveralls, which lacking a drop seat, made "relieving yourself" difficult in combat situations. However, the Marines who wore the Camouflage on Tarawa and elsewhere were easy to spot when moving (as opposed to being stationary) and the pattern was discontinued.
The Utilities were designed to be reversible. The outer side is the base green "jungle" camouflage pattern, with the tan or "sand" side inside the jacket and pants. The jacket is in faded but good overall condition and is ink stamped in the neck as a size 40. There is some minor tearing in spots across from field wear.
All snaps are black U.S.M.C “donut hole” buttons on the jacket are present and in good original condition, but the trousers are missing two. Like the regular P1944 utility jackets made of "sage green" HBT fabric, the jacket has trademark "side entry" pockets on the chest, which were originally intended for use with floatation "pillows", as well as carrying the usual paraphernalia of the typical combat Marine. There is a name under the collar but it’s too worn to read.
The trousers are in good shape but there are minor tears in the material. There are two snaps missing, one from each side of the trousers. There is a very faded name on the sweatband but it’s too hard to read. There is also fraying of the material along the bottom of the legs.
This is a great opportunity to add probably the most iconic camouflage used by the United States Marine Corps, in excellent condition! Comes ready to display!
