  • Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a lovely Sterling Silver presentation bowl, given to the person who officially "launched" the submarine U.S.S. Thornback on July 7th, 1944. As was the custom, a lady was given the honor of breaking a bottle of Champagne over the bow of the new vessel being launched, and in this case Rachel E. Fischler was accorded that honor. The entire dedication listed on the inside of the bowl is as follows:

    U.S. SUBMARINE
    Thornback
    LAUNCHED JULY 7, 1944
    SPONSOR
    Rachel E. Fischler
    PRESENTED BY
    EMPLOYEES OF NAVY YARD
    PORTSMOUTH, N.H.

The bowl looks to be a fruit bowl or something similar, and is 10 1/4" wide at the top, with a total height of 4 1/4". It is marked on the bottom by the maker

    STERLING
    BY
    Ellmore

The bowl is in very good condition, with a lovely lightly tarnished patina. It just has a dent on the rim keeping it from being 'excellent'. We have left it unpolished to preserve the patina, though there are ways to remove tarnish without any removal of material.

A great memento from WWII with some nice research potential. Ready to display!

The Thornback (SS-418), a Tench-Class Submarine. Her keel was laid down 5 April 1944. Her first skipper was Commander Ernest P. The Thornback was decommissioned in 1946, recommissioned in 1953 and then finally decommissioned in 1971 and sold to Turkey in 1973.
