Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. A genuine M1 81mm non-functional BATF complaint inert display mortar as used by U.S. forces in WWII.
The M1 81mm mortar was the largest weapon in the arsenal of the U.S. WWII infantry battalion. It provided the battalion commander with a powerful and flexible indirect fire capability. Sometimes called "infantry artillery," or "hip pocket artillery," mortars were capable of quickly laying down heavy barrages. These could stop enemy attacks under the worst conditions. Able to fire at high angles, mortars could fire at targets in defilade, either under direction of a forward observer, or firing off map coordinates. In the WW2 Pacific campaigns, these weapons became an important part of the battalion's firepower, especially since they could be man-packed into positions that were inaccessible to artillery.
We offer a genuine M1 81mm non-functional BATF complaint inert display mortar as used by U.S. forces in WWII. This inert display is composed of the following:
- Original WWII Type Mortar Base Plate.
- Original WWII Type Adjustable Bipod. The bipod is in lovely condition, and as far as we can tell is fully functional. It is possible that this is an example made in Spain, who made a clone of the M1 mortar that was an exact copy of the U.S. version except for markings.
- Replica WWII style 81mm Mortar Barrel Tube. This is made from an aluminum pipe with an attached rubber / resin base cup. It is completely inert, having never been any type of destructive device. It is quite a bit lighter than an original steel tube, making the display mortar much easier to set up, and less likely to fall over.
- Original U.S. WWII type M34A1 sight unit, which is made up of the various mounts, adapters, and other components used to attach the sight to the crosshead of the M4 bipod. Most of the parts are missing their data plates, but the top is labeled as an M9 TELESCOPE.
- Original U.S. WWII Type 81mm mortar cleaning rod with spring loaded head. While the bore did not need as much cleaning as an artillery piece, propellant gases eventually did cause build up on the inside that needed to be removed.
These weapons are most unusual for the collectors market, and have been stored in Government Arsenals until their recent release. This is a lovely example that would look great as part of any WWII collection.
