Original U.S. WWII “Trench Art” American Prisoner of War Etched Aluminum Cigarette Case With Sherman Tank and Eagle/Bomber Artwork

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. While interned in the various types of camps during WWII, prisoners often found themselves needing something to pass the time. Many POWs would turn to artwork and other related activities such as producing items that would have been useful, like a cigarette case for example. Prisoners would often make items such as this to use as barter items or even sold them to Prison Guards.

The cigarette case does appear to be a popular design amongst the POWs after comparing it to other examples we have seen. These elongated cases would hold approximately 15 cigarettes. The case measures 5 ⅜” x 3” and features incredible artwork on each side. The one side of the case features a lovely Sherman tank while the other side has an Eagle flying with 3 German bombers in the background, symbolizing an Eagle turning into an aircraft.

The overall condition is quite nice and does close properly. The only “real” issue with the case would be the cigarette retaining strap on the inside as it is broken but present. The push button lock still functions properly as do the hinges.
