Original Item: Only One Available. This is a scarce original U.S. Army Air Forces Technical Representative patch dating from the WWII to early postwar period. The insignia is constructed with gold and silver bullion embroidery on a black felt backing and measures approximately 2⅜ inches in diameter.
The center displays a pair of bullion wings beneath the letters U.S., also rendered in bullion. Embroidered around the lower edge are the words:
TECHNICAL REPRESENTATIVE
Army Air Forces Technical Representatives were civilian specialists assigned to provide technical assistance relating to aircraft, engines, equipment, maintenance, and other specialized systems. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum identifies this type of insignia as being associated with civilian Technical Representatives serving with the United States Army Air Forces. The reverse appears to have originally been fitted with four snap fasteners, allowing the insignia to be attached to and removed from a uniform or garment. All four snaps are now missing, leaving visible evidence of their former locations. The black felt backing otherwise remains substantially intact and displays expected age and wear.
This is a particularly attractive bullion variation of an uncommon Army Air Forces Technical Representative insignia. Its removable construction, detailed bullion embroidery, and distinctive occupational designation make it an interesting example of insignia worn by the civilian technical specialists who supported American military aviation during and immediately following WWII.
