Original U.S. WWII “Theater Made” Cut-Down Model 1913 Cavalry “Patton” Saber Fighting Knife With Captured German Bayonet Frog with Attached Souvenir Insignia

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. During World War II, many machine shops and knife makers produced thousands of combat knives for the US troops. This included an unknown craftsman who produced this exceptional fighting knife, which we are honored to offer. These knives are referred to as "Theater Knives" by collectors, indicating that they were either produced or modified by US servicemen in the field, despite being purpose-made fighting knives manufactured in the United States. This example was certainly made in-theater with some captured German parts integrated.

Many knives were mostly created by repurposing obsolete US M-1913 "Patton Sabers". Three fighting knives could be manufactured from each sword. One used the original hilt, ricasso, while the next two were produced with new hilts and blades made from the middle and end portions of the original sword blades like this one.

The knives, though lacking any visible markings, bore an air of mystery and intrigue. Most of the sword-knives were designed with Bowie-style blades that were nothing short of intimidating in appearance. These blades were often expertly honed to a razor-like edge, although this particular one still boasts the exquisite double-edged spear point. Despite showing signs of faithful use, the 7⅜” blade remains in good condition, a testament to the craftsmanship of its creators. The hilt of the weapon appears to be fashioned from a strange composite material, almost giving the appearance of terracotta. The crossguard appears to be a cut piece of iron. The knife measures 12¼” overall.

The accompanying leather scabbard appears to be fashioned from pieces of a German K98 bayonet frog which were stitched onto another scabbard. The soldier attached a cartridge belt attachment hook into the belt loop so he could carry it on his belt. The front of the sheath has a German Heer visor cap eagle, and below that is the shadow of a larger eagle which likely fell off long ago. Below this are three scattered German pips, of which there were likely more before they fell off. This is a great captured piece that would have really drawn some attention from passersby!

Overall this is a prime example of a Patton Blade fighting knife. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
