  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very nice U.S. WWII Basic Parachutist Badge, better known to generations of American soldiers and collectors simply as “Jump Wings.” This example is constructed in sterling silver and retains the desirable wartime-style pin-back attachment. The reverse is clearly stamped:

    STERLING

The badge displays the classic parachute-and-wings design, with an open parachute canopy at center, its suspension lines descending to a point, and a pair of detailed feathered wings extending to either side. The relief remains especially crisp, with excellent definition to the individual feathers and parachute lines. The reverse retains its complete horizontal pin-back assembly with hinge, pin, and catch all present. There is some light surface wear consistent with age, but the badge remains in very attractive condition overall.

The U.S. Army Parachutist Badge was formally approved on March 10, 1941. Its original design was created by Captain William P. Yarborough of the 501st Parachute Battalion, who was sent to Washington to oversee development of an official badge for qualified military parachutists. The first 350 badges were procured through Bailey, Banks & Biddle and delivered to the 501st later that month. The familiar design was subsequently worn by American airborne personnel throughout WWII.

This is the Basic Parachutist Badge, recognizable by the absence of the star and wreath later used for Senior and Master Parachutist grades. Those higher grades were not officially authorized until after WWII, in 1949. The wings and open parachute symbolize flight and individual proficiency as a qualified military parachutist.
