Howard F. Williams served in the Army from January 5th, 1920 to September 2nd, 1934, and again from February 24th, 1941 to January 14th, 1946. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of Field Artillery on March 9th, 1931, a 1st Lieutenant on September 2nd, 1934, and a Captain on March 1st, 1939. While overseas during WWII he served in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel, and was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star during World War II. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island.
Williams’ Silver Star Citation reads:
Major Howard F. Wiliams Army SN# 0286065, Field Artillery, 963rd FA Battalion, US Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy in Germany on March 1st, 1945. When a large number of enemy artillery rounds fell in the area of his battalion, setting fire to a loaded ammunition truck and causing casualties, Major Williams, with complete disregard for personal safety, left a building in which he had taken shelter and carried an injured man to safety. Despite continued shelling, Williams returned to the burning truck and assisted in removing the vehicle to a position where the exploding load of his explosive ammunition would not cause further damage. The courage, high regard for his men, and coolness under fire displayed by Major Williams reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Service. Entered military service from Rhode Island.
The grouping comes ready for further research and display. There is definitely much more to find on Williams, making this a great opportunity!
