Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a scarce original U.S. WWII British-made 2nd Model ETO wool field jacket, produced in England for American forces serving in the European Theater of Operations. Developed under U.S. Army ETO direction and strongly influenced by British battledress, this second-pattern jacket represents the later and more distinctly British-style version of the locally procured ETO field jacket. This example is void of insignia but retains all of its buttons and bears a British War Department broad arrow acceptance stamp inside the sleeve.

The lining is also marked VO 8905. This appears to be a later museum, institutional, or collection inventory number rather than an original wartime military marking, although its exact source is presently unknown.
The ETO field jacket originated from the European Theater’s dissatisfaction with existing American field clothing. Beginning in 1942, the ETO Quartermaster was authorized to develop and procure a short wool field jacket in Britain, drawing heavily upon the practical features of British battledress. General Eisenhower subsequently authorized the purchase of approximately 300,000 British-made wool jackets for American use.
The revised jacket, Specification U/1379, was approved in September 1943 and is commonly identified by collectors as the 2nd Model ETO Jacket. This version more closely resembled British battledress, with upper front patch pockets replacing the earlier slash pockets, shirt-style adjustable cuffs, and side waist adjustment tabs in place of the front belt.
This example is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its British manufacture, 2nd Model ETO configuration, complete button set, British W / broad arrow / D acceptance marking, and later VO 8905 inventory number. It represents the locally developed European Theater wool jacket that directly influenced the standardized short wool field jackets subsequently adopted by the U.S. Army.
