Original U.S. WWII Rare Prisoner of War Camp Made Cast Solder Allied Forces “Wings” On Display Board - 13 Wings Mounted

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is an incredibly rare, POW Camp made display board featuring 13 different Allied “Wings” insignia. The wings are all mounted on a lovely shield shaped wooden plaque with a felt-like backing. All wings appear to have been made in the same fashion, most likely done by the same soldier. We were fortunate enough to learn how these wings were made from a note present with the grouping. In the note, the original owner states how his Uncle had made them during his internment at Stalag Luft 1.

The way these were produced was a very simple method with beautiful results. The already existing various badges that the prisoners held onto were used as the basis for a mold. The prisoners would use gum wrappers/foil to press around the existing badges to form the now hollow mold. The material used to fill the molds was melted down solder and lead bits salvaged from Red Cross parcels. After cooling, the finer details would have been added by hand, giving the wings a more personal touch than they already had.
