Original Item: Only One Available. This is a scarce original U.S. WWII M1942 black porcelain-enamel canteen housed in a desirable U.S. Marine Corps crossed-flap or “dog ear” canteen carrier with the bottom drain/funnel opening, commonly identified by collectors as the 4th Pattern USMC carrier. Also included is an original 1942-dated canteen cup marked U.S. / MEMCO / 42. The set shows genuine wartime use, with dents and moderate enamel loss to the canteen, but remains a particularly attractive combination of early-war material-conservation equipment and Marine Corps field gear.
The result was this, the M1942 Black Porcelain Enamel Canteen. Unfortunately, this "experiment" was not successful at all, and there were numerous complaints from the field, as the chipped enamel inside from a dent would result in water contamination, and overall the canteens were just not very resilient. They were quickly removed from service, and replaced by the standard aluminum canteens that everyone is familiar with today. They are very scarce on the market, especially with the original carrier and matching enameled canteen cup.
This set is in very good condition, but the canteen itself has some dents and moderate chips in the porcelain enamel. It still has the original stopper cap, retained by the correct galvanized steel chain, though the washer is missing. There is no maker mark, likely worn away long ago
The canteen is held in their correct WWII Issue USMC "dog eared" carrier, which is in very good condition. This is the 4th version of the carrier, which is identical to the 3rd version, except that there is a "drain hole" in the bottom of the carrier. The carrier is in good overall shape. The included cup is marked U.S. / MEMCO / 42.
This set is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its scarce 1942-production black porcelain-enamel canteen, original stopper and galvanized retaining chain, USMC crossed-flap carrier with bottom opening, and 1942-dated MEMCO cup. The enamel loss and dents illustrate precisely why this short-lived wartime material solution was eventually abandoned, while the Marine Corps carrier and dated cup place the assembly firmly within the equipment culture of the early American war effort.
