This is an extraordinarily scarce original U.S. Army Air Forces bullion patch associated with Eastern Command Russia, also referred to by collectors as the AAF Ferry Command to the Soviet Union. The insignia is connected with American personnel operating in the Soviet Union during the shuttle-bombing missions of Operation Frantic.

Despite the “Ferry Command” terminology sometimes used for the unit, its wartime role was not simply to ferry aircraft. American personnel in the Soviet Union supported and serviced heavy bombers of the Eighth and Fifteenth Air Forces participating in shuttle missions between bases in the United Kingdom or Italy and airfields in the Soviet Union.

Operation Frantic was conceived as a way to extend the reach of Allied strategic bombing by allowing American bombers to strike targets in German-controlled territory and then continue eastward to Soviet bases rather than returning directly to their original airfields. After refueling, rearming, and servicing, the aircraft could conduct additional missions while returning west.

The operation proved difficult and short-lived. During one of the best-known incidents, German aircraft attacked the American shuttle-bombing force while it was on the ground in the Soviet Union, destroying or damaging numerous B-17 Flying Fortresses. Political distrust and operational difficulties also limited the program, and only a relatively small number of shuttle missions were ultimately flown.

Although the American contingent supporting these operations reportedly numbered close to 1,000 personnel, surviving insignia associated with Eastern Command Russia are exceptionally difficult to find. Bullion examples are especially desirable.

This patch measures approximately 3 inches in diameter and is constructed with high quality bullion embroidery on a blue cloth backing. The reverse displays period construction consistent with wartime manufacture.

Condition is worn but honest. There is significant moth damage, including several small nips and holes in the blue backing and material loss around portions of the outer edge. Despite this, the bullion work remains visually impressive and the patch retains strong overall character.

This is an extremely rare piece of U.S. Army Air Forces insignia associated with one of the most unusual strategic bombing operations of WWII. Even with the moth damage, it remains a highly desirable example for an advanced AAF, Operation Frantic, or Eastern Front aviation collection.
