Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful and increasingly difficult to find original World War II U.S. Army Parachute Infantry officer’s garrison cap, representing one of the most famous and elite fighting forces of the Second World War.
The U.S. Airborne divisions became legendary during WWII, with American paratroopers playing crucial roles in campaigns such as Sicily, Normandy, Operation Market Garden, and the final push into Germany. Airborne troops were highly trained volunteers who undertook some of the most dangerous missions of the war, often jumping behind enemy lines ahead of conventional forces.
This example is a tan summer weight officer’s garrison cap configured for an officer of the Parachute Infantry. The right side features a period-applied Paratrooper Infantry patch, immediately identifying the wearer as part of America’s airborne forces. These distinctive insignia pieces were proudly worn and remain among the most recognizable symbols associated with WWII paratroopers.
The cap features the correct black and gold officer piping, indicating commissioned officer status. The piping remains in good condition overall, without significant loss or damage.
The interior sweatband shows service wear, exactly what collectors expect from a cap that was actually worn rather than stored away. Inside is the stamped laundry number:
D7656
Interestingly, this is an enlisted-style laundry number marking, which may indicate that the original owner served as an enlisted soldier before receiving a commission as an officer. This was not uncommon during WWII, as experienced enlisted personnel were promoted through officer candidate programs to meet the rapidly expanding needs of the wartime Army.
The laundry number provides an excellent opportunity for further research and may allow identification of the original airborne officer who wore this cap.
Overall, this is a fantastic original WWII Parachute Infantry officer’s garrison cap with excellent display appeal. With its officer piping, period-applied airborne insignia, visible service wear, and researchable laundry marking, it represents exactly the type of personal artifact collectors seek.
A wonderful addition to any WWII U.S. Airborne, paratrooper, or American militaria collection.
Ready for further research and display.
