Original U.S. WWII Pacific Joseph Beal & Sons Sheffield Bowie Knife With Captured Japanese Navy Insignia Inlaid into Handle

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Available. This is a wonderful bowie style fighting knife produced by the famed Joseph Beal and Sons Limited of Sheffield. The knife does not appear to be in original configuration as the handle appears to be a theater made one. The leather sheath does appear to be original to the knife, but did have the belt loop removed. Replacing the handles on already existing fighting knives was a common occurrence, especially during the wet, humid climate in the Pacific. The moisture would cause the handles to deteriorate rapidly and the Marines / Soldiers would fashion new ones, much like this one here.

The knife is a fine example of a “J&J Limited” small bowie style knife, with a custom brass handguard and a redwood handle inlaid with a captured Japanese Naval insignia. The opposite side of the handle has a small aluminum shield with the initials “T / CJM / 10”. We are uncertain as to what this means, but it was more than likely an identification tag of sorts for the soldier who carried it.

A lovely example that comes more than ready for further research and display.
