Original U.S. WWII Numbered Traced Bailey Banks & Biddle Silver Star Medal in Case - 24642

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a rare 1932 contact issued to Bailey Banks & Biddle Company Silver Star Medal. 50,000 were produced approximately 15,000 were issued prior to WWII and the remaining were issued during the war. This specific medal was awarded to Private Adelard P. Provost of the 47th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division. This is confirmed by General Order #38, 1943, 9th Infantry Division. Which awards the Silver Star Medal to PVT Provost and states that he received medal #24642. The ribbon is fraying at the brooch.

His citation reads as follows:
Adelard Provost, 31048957, Private, Company ***, *** Infantry. For Gallantry in action. On the *** March 1943, near ***, Tunsia, Private Provost, scout, received head and shoulder wounds from shrapnel. After receiving medical attention he returned to the scene of the action and assisted the medical men in evacuating numerous casualties the entire day. Residence Danielson, Conn. (Medal #246420.)

A photo copy of this general order will accompany this medal. Additional information on PVT Provost was obtained from the unit history of the 47th Infantry Regiment which contains a roll of Silver Star Recipients, confirming his assignment to that regiment. His middle initial was obtained from the VA where he is listed as being buried in Riverside National Cemetery in, Riverside, CA. He was discharged a PFC and was born 1/31/1919 and died on 12/2/1983 . He is buried in Section 11 site 953.

According to the index the 9th Infantry Division's General Orders PFC Provost's only other decortion was his Purple Heart Medal which seems to have been issued by a hospital unit or the 47th Infantry Regiment as it does not appear in the division's general orders. Of the roughly 35,000 BB&B Silver Star Medal awarded during WW2 only about 2,500 to 3,000 are identifiable by their medal numbers. So these early WWH BB&B Silver Star Medals are rarer than a WWII DSC or NC. And are 5 times more rare then WWI Silver Star Medals!
