This is an original U.S. WWII NEWSMAP, Volume II, Number 40, dated Monday, January 24, 1944, featuring the striking full-color GERMAN ARMY Uniforms identification chart on one side and the week's illustrated wartime news summary on the reverse. This was an American military publication intended for the information and orientation of U.S. service personnel.

The uniform side is an especially attractive and detailed wartime recognition chart showing the clothing, insignia, equipment, and appearance of German Army personnel as understood by U.S. military intelligence in early 1944. The chart is divided into several major categories, including Field Gray Uniforms, Tropical Uniforms, Mobile Troops, and Mountain Uniforms. The illustrations depict officers and enlisted men in a broad assortment of dress, including infantrymen, armored and Panzer personnel, mountain troops, tropical troops, and signal troops. Also illustrated are helmets and field caps, national and branch insignia, belt equipment, packs, saddlebags, boots and shoes, greatcoats, cold-weather clothing, snow camouflage, and other field equipment. The illustrations and information were derived from the wartime Joint Army-Navy J.A.N. No. 1 uniform and insignia recognition guide.

Of particular collector interest is the presentation of German mountain and armored troops. The mountain section includes the characteristic mountain cap, Edelweiss insignia, rucksack, winter clothing, wind garments, and snow camouflage, while the mobile-troop section illustrates black armored uniforms, Panzer headgear and insignia, and equipment associated with German mechanized forces. The tropical section similarly shows the distinctive clothing and equipment associated with German forces operating in warmer climates.

Dominating the sheet is a large map of the Eastern Front showing Soviet advances and the developing situation across Eastern Europe during January 1944. The combination of maps, photographs, and concise front-by-front reports made NEWSMAP an effective way of keeping American military personnel informed about the rapidly changing course of the war.

The poster remains quite attractive for an original large-format paper publication of this age. It retains strong color to the German Army uniform illustrations, with the figures, equipment, insignia, maps, photographs, and printed captions remaining readily visible. It shows the expected period folding throughout, along with general paper toning, scattered creasing, fold wear, and light edge and corner wear from storage and handling.
