Original U.S. WWII Navy VF9 Navy Cross Hellcat Pilot Grouping - Lt. Vasco Armani

Item Description

Original Items: One-of-a-kind set. The items in this grouping belonged to an Ensign Vasco Armani of Indiana who served as a pilot in the United States Navy. Records indicate that he served in both VF9 and VF79 during WWII and piloted Hellcats. An official war diary record for the 31st of December, 1943 that he damaged an airplane during landing a copy of this document is included. In one original wartime photo included in this collection he is wearing the medal ribbon for the Navy Cross. We have not been able to verify this award (which is not uncommon), but it would be a court-martial level offense for an officer to wear unearned award.

Included in this set are the following pieces:

- A very nice size 36 M-422A flight jacket. This was the most widely produced of all the USN intermediate leather flight jackets of the 1940's, seeing action in every battle that USN/USMC aviators took part in: from U-Boat hunting in the Atlantic and invasion patrols on D-Day, to the decisive Pacific engagements at Midway, Guadalcanal and the “Marianas Turkey Shoot.”

- NAF 1092W Leather Flight Helmet by Slote & Klein in excellent condition complete with chinstrap.
