Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good service-worn original U.S. WWII Navy Mark 1 fighting and utility knife manufactured by Camillus Cutlery Co. of Camillus, New York, complete with a period leather sheath. The knife retains its stacked leather grip, plastic pommel, original black blade finish, and clearly stamped Camillus maker marking.
From a collecting standpoint the beauty of the Mark I knives is in the wide variety of makers and blades that can be found. As for values, like most things USGI blades are evaluated based on scarcity and condition.
This knife is a well-worn example in a leather sheath. All leather grip washers are intact and present, and it was made by the Camillus Cutlery Co. of Camillus, N.Y.. The plastic butt cap is in great shape and is tight on the grip, so the leather has not shrunk while in storage. The knife measures 9 5/8" overall, with a 5" clip point blade. The blade is nicely marked CAMILLUS / N.Y. on the ricasso. The original factory black finish is retained quite well, with just the factory sharpening removing the finish on the very edge. Please note that this knife is VERY SHARP, so handle with care.
The scabbard is a leather example in fair shape with dry rot, particularly around the rivets. The securing strap is intact but crazed.
The combination of the CAMILLUS / N.Y. ricasso marking, retained wartime black finish, complete stacked leather grip, tight plastic pommel, sharp full-profile blade, and period leather sheath makes this a strong representative example of the U.S. Navy Mark 1. The dry rot and crazing to the sheath are the principal condition issues, while the knife itself remains notably complete and well preserved.
