Original Item. Only One Available. A "Notice To Mariners" from 1917 states: The submarine distinguishing and warning flag is hoisted on the tender or parent ship of submarines to indicate that submarines are operating in the vicinity. Launches accompanying submarines also fly this flag. The submarine warning flag consists of a rectangular red flag with white center on which is the profile of a torpedo in black. Vessels seeing this signal should give the escorting vessel a wide berth and keep a good lookout for submarines.
This is a tremendously scarce example of a WWII Navy Submarine Warning flag in a very large displayable size, roughly 60 x 96”. This example would have been used on a larger vessel, with the rings and halyard still intact. The flag shows heavy wear accurate for having been flown on the open sea. The header is stamped SUB. WARN 3 for submarine warning flag, size 3. The material has held up very well over time, and this would be a great candidate for framing.
