Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. The Air Medal (AM) is a military decoration of the United States Armed Forces. It was created in 1942 and is awarded for single acts of heroism or meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight.
This is a great Navy issue wrap-brooch Air Medal, unengraved, with a period copy of the original citation, which reads:
In the name of the President of the United States, the Commander
Carrier Division THREE, Pacific, presents the AIR MEDAL to
LIEULINANT JOHN FRANCIS MCCLOSKEY
UNITED STATES NAVAL RESERVE
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For distinguishing himself by meritorious acts while participating in aerial flights in operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Honshu, Japan. On 30 July 1945, he was the leader of the second section of a division of carrier based fighter planes that participated in a coordinated attack on the airfield at 01, Honshu. In spite of accurate antiaircraft fire, he pressed home his attacks and scored a direct hit with a heavy caliber bomb contributing to the destruction of a shop building. He then participated in a series of strafing attacks with the others of his division and assisted in the destruction of two aircraft on the ground and the damaging of five more. On 10 August 1945, when the weather closed in on the Tsuruoka Airfield, Honshu, he participated in attacks on targets of opportunity in the vicinity of Sakata lown, Honshu. He strafed and slightly damaged a hammer-head crane, a 700 ton freighter, numerous fishing boats and scored a direct heavy caliber bomb hit, seriously damaging a shop at Honjo. He also scored a direct rocket hit that severely damaged a railroad bridge at Sakata. On 13 August 1945, he pressed home a series of attacks on targets at the Koriyana Airfield, Honshu, strafing and probably destroying four aircraft on the ground and damaging four more. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
The citation has some water damage and tearing at the bottom, but is signed by Admiral T.L. Sprague, U.S. Navy.
