Item Description
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This United States Naval Service service coat is named to lt. Harry Edwin Leslie who was a fighter pilot assigned to Fighter Squadron VF-29 during World War Two. He was reported Missing in Action on October 29th, 1944 after receiving the Air Medal for actions on October 12th 1944.
AWARDED AIR MEDAL CITATION
"For distinguishing himself by meritorious acts while participating in the aerial flight under fire as the pilot of a single seater carrier based fighter plane. On 12 October 1944, in the vicinity of Formosa he was conducting a routine Anti-Snooper patrol in company with a torpedo plane. Upon sighting two enemy twin-engine bombers, he quickly pressed home an attack on the nearest plane which immediately caught fire and crashed. He then attacked the remaining bomber and after disabling one engine, with his remaining ammunition, attempted to destroy the plane by forcing it into the water. His skill and resourcefulness during this engagement were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
MISSING IN ACTION REPORT
"Officially reported to be Missing in Action as of 29 October 1944, when the plane in which he was flying, a unit of Fighting Squadron Twenty-Nine, was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire and made a forced water landing in Laguna de Bay, Luson Island, The Philippines. In compliance with said Section 5 of Public Law 490, as amended, death is presumed to have occurred on the 30th day of October 1945."
