Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very interesting original U.S. WWI Browning Automatic Rifle magazine belt manufactured by Plant Bros. in 1918 and later over-dyed dark Navy blue for subsequent service use. The belt retains its original WWI construction and maker markings beneath the later blue finish, while the unusual color has traditionally led examples of this type to be associated with U.S. Navy use during WWII.
The belt is marked on the back of both sides for 1918 manufacture by the Plant Bros., with these markings now under the blue paint. The snaps are all in working order but the back pieces of the belt itself are missing the small prong hooks at the end. The belt is overall in good still-functional condition.
The combination of the 1918 Plant Bros. manufacture, original BAR ammunition-belt construction, later Navy-blue over-dye, surviving maker markings, and functioning pocket snaps makes this an unusual example of American military web equipment that appears to have remained in use well beyond its original WWI production period. The missing rear prong hooks are the principal completeness issue, while the precise Navy and Corpsman association remains an interesting subject for further research.
