Original U.S. WWII Navy 7x50 Bu. Aero. Mark 21 SARD Binoculars by Square D with Polarized Filters in Case

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent condition pair of WWII U.S. Navy Mark 21 SARD 7x 50 Binoculars by Square D, specifically designed for the Bureau of Aeronautics. When the mission was to observe movement across a wide expanse of sky or water then a binocular with a much wider field of view was justified. Several wide angle binocular models were commissioned specifically for the Bureau of Aeronautics whose vital work included reconnaissance (searching for U-Boats and other enemy ships), as well as search and rescue; these bear the designation BU. AERO as found on this example.

The binoculars are marked ;to the left side of eye piece:

(SARD)

PRODUCT OF
SQUARE D COMPANY
FLUSHING NEW YORK

They are also marked to the right side of eye piece:

(7 x 50)

BU. AERO. U.S. NAVY
MARK 21
F.S.S.C 88-B-320

The optics are clear and excellent, all aspects of the binoculars function, and they are in overall excellent condition. The rubber eyepieces are still soft, and each eyepiece still has functional "flip-out" polarized tinted filters, a MUST due to the glare of the Sun on the sea. The eyepiece diopters both focus correctly, though the grease has become very stiff.

Leather neck strap is supple and strong without defect, the case is marked BAUSCH & LOMB and is in excellent condition with full leather carry strap. The only issue is that the leather top handle has torn through. There are even additional polarized filters in the small pouch on the lid for additional tint possibilities.

Overall a fantastic rare Bureau of Aeronautics wide angle 7x50 binocular set from WWII. They really do not get much better than this!
