  • Original Item: Only One Available. This WWII US Army Officer's Winter Service "Peaked Visor" is a prime example. The cap is in fantastic condition, with hardly any signs of wear or use. It is evident that this particular item was well taken care of and stored properly, as the only signs of wear are from display or storage. The cap has virtually no mothnips, which is a common issue with vintage wool.

It is noteworthy that the cap is complete, even with the rear adjustment strap still intact. This feature is often missing, making this item even more special. The material and color of the cap are still in excellent condition, with no fading or discoloration. The visor is still stiff and holds its shape, which is a testament to its quality craftsmanship.

The cap still retains a fully legible maker stamp underneath the orange celluloid lining. The cap was manufactured by Knox of New York. Charles Knox founded the Knox Hat Company in 1838. The company started with a small shop on Fulton Street, but it grew to larger premises on Broadway, Nassau Street, and finally, its corporate headquarters and shop on Fifth Avenue. The shop was considered the "most elegant establishment of its kind in the country."

Knox Hatters sold beaver hats to New Yorkers before the Civil War, and the company did well. After the Civil War, Edward Knox, Charles' son, took over the company and successfully turned it around.

By the mid-19th century, Knox Hats were widely sold across America, and the largest hat factory in the world, located in Brooklyn, produced them. This was the peak of the top hat trend, and many famous Americans wore Knox hats. 23 US Presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, wore Knox hats. Lincoln famously kept important papers in his Knox Stovepipe hat.

Knox's reputation was built on the quality of their hats and their ability to promote the business through newspaper advertising. In 1928, Knox Hat Co., Inc operated 62 retail stores and distributed through 2,500 agencies across America. Net sales in 1928 were over $8 million. The Knox brand lasted until the Great Depression, when the three largest Hatters merged to become the Hat Corporation of America (known as Hat-Co).

During WWII, Knox began producing premium officer hats due to increased demand for war supplies. However, their Brooklyn factory closed shortly after the war, and the Knox name was forgotten.

Overall, this is an iconic and wonderful cap that would make a great addition to any military collection or historical display. Its excellent condition and historical significance make it a unique find that any enthusiast or collector would be proud to own. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
